The Health Benefits of Marshmallow
Marshmallow’s (Althaea officinalis) history as a healing herb goes back centuries when Hippocrates prescribed a root concoction of marshmallow to treat bruises and blood loss from wounds. Four hundred years later, Greek physician Dioscorides recommended marshmallow root as one of the best cures for vomiting and toothache relief and made a poultice of marshmallow root for insect bites and stings. When speaking of marshmallow, Roman naturalist Pliny stated, “Whoever shall take a spoonful of the marshmallow shall that day be free from all diseases.”
Marshmallow has been used throughout time externally for wounds, bruises, scalds, swelling, burns and severe blood loss. The root decoction of marshmallow is one of the best known to take internally for sore throats, colds, diarrhea, intestinal problems and any irritation of the bladder and kidney.
Marshmallow For Respiratory Problems
Marshmallow is one of the most effective treatments taken internally for any respiratory illness from laryngitis, sore throat, cough, flu and bronchitis. Slovakian researchers did a study where they treated a variety of creatures with severe coughing and throat congestion with dozens of herbs. Marshmallow root worked the best out of every herb they tried.
Marshmallow For Wounds
When applied directly on the wound, the mucilage gel from marshmallow is one of the most effective treatments for soothing and protecting wounds, burns, cuts and scrapes of the skin.
Marshmallow For Managing Diabetes
Marshmallow has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in numerous studies released recently and is being looked into as a source for managing diabetes.
Marshmallow For Increased Immunity and Protection
Marshmallow has been known throughout history as being soothing to the body. A recent study has shown that marshmallow also improves the ability for white blood cells to devour disease microbes, a process called phagocytosis.
Marshmallow root effectively boosts all areas of the body’s immune system, making it less resistant to disease and more energetic. Singers have been regularly reported to make a marshmallow tea to soothe and keep their throats and body primed for weeks before they do a concert.
How to Use Marshmallow To Heal The Body
To take advantage of marshmallow’s healing properties, gently boil ½ to 1 tsp. of chopped or crushed root per cup of water for 15 minutes and drink as a tea.
For external use, chop the root finely and add enough water to it to produce a gel. Apply this soothing gel directly to any wound or bruise for immediate relief.

“Fair Trade” by Solano Community Collage Artists.
One of my favorite ‘pieces’ from the conference. It was very interesting to see what people traded for the items on display. Some left money, some left jewelry, there was one empty(?) bottle of uh, alternative medication. My favorite was the necklace.
